Strategic dialogue – Europe on the global stage: Influence or irrelevance?

As major jurisdictions pursue increasingly divergent regulatory strategies, debate is intensifying over Europe’s role on the global stage. The EU is advancing far-reaching frameworks such as the AI Act, its broader digital rulebook and the European Green Deal, reflecting an ambition to steer technological innovation and climate action in line with European values, consumer protection and long-term economic sustainability. Elsewhere, regulators emphasise market flexibility, rapid innovation or lighter-touch oversight.

These contrasting approaches intersect with debates over sovereignty — including digital and technological sovereignty — shaping competitiveness, data flows and insurers’ ability to operate across borders.
